Have you ever heard a song on the radio, smelled something in the air or even had a meal that took you back to a memory? For as far back as I can remember, I have done this because I link mental images with my senses. I can smell rubber and remember how my dad would smell after coming home from working at a local tire plant or I can hear an old Conway Twitty song and think about my mom playing his record when I would return home from visiting my dad for the weekend.
I eat ice cream and I’m transported back to the old ice cream parlor, Dipper Dan’s, that my grandmother would carry me and my little sister to on the weekends. I can still see the red and white striped walls and the heart shaped chairs where we sat and ate our ice cream those sunny afternoons.
Whenever I cook a roast I think about my sweet mother cooking one on the stove for several hours and how the wonderful aroma would fill our house.
When I see the daffodils lining the ditches I think about Easter egg hunts at my Nanny and Paw Paw Ray’s house with my aunts, uncles and cousins and the fun we all would have. Anytime I eat pickles I think of spending summers with my Nanny and Paw Paw Cox and eating the most scrumptious homemade pickles that my Nanny would make and store in gallon jars.
If I stop by McDonald’s to grab breakfast, I think about my dad holding our hash browns out the window so they would be cool enough to eat. To this day when I smell Baby Magic baby lotion I am reminded of my two precious babies and how I loved to slather it all over their chubby, little bodies as soon as they finished their baths. All of these sweet, wonderful memories are locked away safe in my mind but in an instant I can go back and recall some very happy times.
Do you have a fond memory that is triggered by a smell, taste or something you saw or heard? If so comment and share it with me. I’d love to hear your stories!!
