The Bigs – The Great American Hot Dog Recipe

Yesterday was Opening Day for Major League Baseball and to celebrate this momentous occasion we wanted to talk a little about America’s Favorite Pastime and share with you another one of Steph’s recipes, “The Bigs”, a giant, juicy stadium style hot dog!!

Makes my mouth just water thinking about being at the ball park, watching the greatest sport on earth, eating a stadium dog with loaded nachos and drinking an ice cold beer!!  Life doesn’t get much better than that!

Whether you are a baseball fan or not, there is just something special about getting together with family, friends and other fans.  No matter what sport you enjoy, you can light up the grill and create your own pastime, hanging out with others, having a few drinks and devouring “The Bigs.”  It’s easy to make and you will love every bite of it!

Opening Day Facts

  • The First Opening Day in Major League history was in 1876.
  • On April 4, 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves ignited the Opening Day crowd at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium with his 714th career home run, tying Babe Ruth on Major League Baseball’s all-time list. Aaron finished his career with 755 home runs.

  • Ted Williams was a .449 hitter in openers, with three home runs and fourteen runs batted in during fourteen games. “Teddy Ballgame” also boasted at least one hit in every Opening Day game he appeared in. Williams’ first Opening Day (April 20, 1939) was especially noteworthy as he faced the rival New York Yankees and Lou Gehrig, who was playing in his 2,123rd consecutive game.
  • Opening Day 1940 witnessed one of the most famous pitching events as Cleveland ace Bob Feller and White Sox hurler Eddie Smith went head-to-head. Smith blinked, but Feller remained in control and tossed the only Opening Day no-hitter in Major League history.

The Bigs - The Great American Reuben Hot Dog Recipe

Ingredients

  • 8 Bun Length Juicy Franks
  • 8 Top-sliced Hot Dog Buns
  • 8 slices of Bacon
  • 8 Slices of Swiss Cheese
  • 1 Jar of Sauerkraut
    Homemade 1000 Island Dressing
  • 2 Tablespoons Heinz ketchup
  • 1/2 Cup Hellman's mayonnaise
  • 1/4 C sweet pickle relish
  • 1 Teaspoon white onion, finely minced
  • 1 Tablespoon Vinegar
  • 2 Teaspoons sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 dash black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cut slit down the center of the franks.
  2. Stuff each frank with a slice of swiss cheese.
  3. Wrap the stuffed frank with a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
  4. Bake at 350 until the bacon turns a crispy brown. Can be grilled as well.
    Homemade 1000 Island Dressing
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and stir well.
  2. Place dressing in covered container several hours, stirring occasionally, so the sugar dissolves and the flavors blend.
    Build Your Rueben "Bigs"
  1. Place a hot bacon wrapped stuffed franks in the top sliced buns.
  2. Smear the top with the Homemade 1000 Island dressing
  3. Top with sauerkraut
  4. Drizzle with more dressing if desired.
    Take a "BIGS" bite and ENJOY!!!
